First Day School Calendar

February 22

  • Teen Group (grades 6-12): GCFM Scholarships: Join Cory and Martha to learn about the GCFM scholarship process. Discover how our Meeting supports graduating seniors as they prepare for their next chapters starting this March.
  • Middle Group (grades PreK-5): The SPICES Traveling Peace Troupe Board Game: After reading a short Bible verse, a tiny excerpt from Faith & Practice, and a story about the “I” in SPICES, we will be joined by some of the Traveling Peace Troupe crew and revisit our board game! We’ll see what works, what doesn’t, what’s needed, and figure out the steps to get it ready to play.
  • Oakdale Nursery (Infant-PreK): Children enjoy toys, games, stories and play.

March 1

  • Teen Group (grades 6-12): Alternatives to Violence: Join Sheila and Hank from the Peace & Social Concerns committee to learn ways to resolve conflicts peacefully.

  • Teen Group (grades 6-12): A Talk with AFSC: Join us as a guest from the American Friends Service Committee tells the teens about their program “Emerging Leaders for Liberation”.
  • Middle Group (grades PreK-5): The Value of Kindness: We’ll read about Quaker Elizabeth Fry to discover how bravery and kindness can change lives. Along the way, we’ll try our hand at making origami puppies!
  • Oakdale Nursery (Infant-PreK): Children enjoy toys, games, stories and play.

March 15

  • Teen Group (grades 6-12): Alternatives to Violence: Join Sheila and Hank from the Peace & Social Concerns committee to learn ways to resolve conflicts peacefully.
  • Middle Group (grades PreK-5): Pictures, Parables, & Practice: We’ll weave together a Bible verse, Faith & Practice, and a Lilly & Friends story. Children will create art while discussing how SPICES appear in what we read.
  • Oakdale Nursery (Infant-PreK): Children enjoy toys, games, stories and play.

March 22

Regional Quaker Gathering at GCFM

  • Teen Group (grades 6-12): History Walk: This week, we’ll take the show outside for a walking tour of our meeting grounds. We’ll explore the buildings and land to learn the history of Goose Creek Friends.
  • Middle Group (grades PreK-5): Peaceable Kingdom: Today we’ll explore a fun fact about Goose Creek Meeting: Edward Hicks, the artist of the famous Peaceable Kingdom paintings, delivered a sermon at our Meeting, right here! He shared how his religious beliefs were expressed in his art; how cool is that? We’ll learn a little about what inspired the paintings, a little about why peace is important to Quakers and others, and then have a chance to build a Peaceable Kingdom collage!
  • Oakdale Nursery (Infant-PreK): Children enjoy toys, games, stories and play.

April 5

  • Teen Group (grades 6-12): Easter
  • Middle Group (grades PreK-5): Easter
  • Oakdale Nursery (Infant-PreK): Children enjoy toys, games, stories and play.

April 12

  • Teen Group (grades 6-12): Citizen George: We’ll continue a documentary about Quaker activist George Lakey. We’ll follow his 60-year journey using nonviolence and faith to work for peace, justice, and community.
  • Middle Group (grades PreK-5): TBD
  • Oakdale Nursery (Infant-PreK): Children enjoy toys, games, stories and play.
